Hey all, I'm just curious as to whether or not any of you overseas guys keep, or have seen Australian natives in your parts i.e. Barrimundi, Australian Bass, Cod, Perch, Blue Marron Crayfish, Archers etc.

I was just thinking about it as almost 80% of all fish sold in Australia come from overseas and want to know if we actually export these guys :/

For the most part, rainbowfish are the common FW fish species from Australia that I'm aware of (that certainly doesn't mean they're the only ones though). Although, they come from most of the surrounding islands as well and can be captive bred.

There are quite a few marine species from the great barrier reef area that are exported.

Are perch native to Australia?

Cod are native to a lot of cold marine waters around the world.

I should be more specific but lack knowledge :p yes, there are Murray River Cod and Spangled Perch (to name the ones I can think of) that are Australian FW. I would really like to see a Barramundi over seas, another huge tankbuster to go with all the cool stuff you guys have :sly:

yes they do export aussie natives
barramundi's are occaisionaly tankmates with aripamas and red tail catfishes talk about tank busters

Yeah one of the local watering holes has a huge barramundi in a big tank.... he's a bit too big for the tank now if you ask me but they've had him for years and years so someone's looking after him...

You can also get Pseudomugil (Blue Eyes) in the U.S. I have a small shoal of P. gertrudae right now in fact. I believe these come from Queensland, though a good deal of the genus is from New Guinea.

I've also seen a desert Goby native to Australia in the LFS here.

I'm not too big of a fan of big fish, but I'd really like to see some of the more colorful Galaxids available in the trade in the States. They'd be cute little buggers for a dedicated coldwater tank.

If I recall, there are heavy restrictions on what fish can be exported from Australia. I think only fish caught within X miles of the coast can be legally exported.
