Someone that lives local to me has offered to give me a baby lobster, he can't remember the name but it's aparently blue and red and australian, I haven't seen it yet but it's about a inch long. Is this a suitable inhabitant to have? I only have a couple of platies at the moment, I'm planning on having a mixed peaceful community aquarium.

Jay.

Im sure your platy's will soon become tasty snacks for this "baby" lobster. Cause they do eat small fish. :/ They will shred any real plants you have too. :(

There are a quite a few species but only a few available in the shops.

This is why i often see these lobsters or "Yabbies" as we call them here, in a tank on their lonesome in shops! :(

A plastic tube or ceramic pot is ideal for them too hide away in too.

Hope i was of some help, maybe someone in the Oddballs area could give you some more specific details. Goodluck

Yeah, thanks. the person offering it says it lives quite happily with all his fish. It would help if I could find out what exactly it was. At some point, I'll have to try and get a pic.

The 240 con breeder tank I'm running has extensive rockwork two crayfish (one without the big claws) and 3 platies and the platies share caves with the creyfish safely, but different species behave differently, the creyfish of oregon lakes have been known to take out 9 inch trout.

Hi, i've got a pic now, I think it's a blue knight lobster, not sure though, it's been in my tank with the platies all night now, and they're all still there. I know it's a bit early to tell if they're gonna get eaten or not but the lobster has literally walked over the fish without even flinching as if it doesn't even know they're there.

Doesn't look as blue as the ones I usually see at my lfs, maybe because of it's age? Do you know how old is s/he? And if that really is a blue knight lobster, did you check out Live Aquaria's stat sheet on them?Just in case you haven't already.

Anyways, great lobster, and I hope it won't harm your fish...

I don't know if s/he is a blue knight lobster, I did actually read that page and all the info sounds like it and it looks like it only alot bluer which I think this might possibly get to when it grows up and sheads it's skin and stuff. I'm not sure on the age as yet, I forgot to ask the guy when I got him but he's a neighbour so i'll ask him next time I see him. I think s/he's really cool, alot more character than I thought. I keep saying s/he because I wont know the sex until it's a bit older and the male gets a red streak on each claw.

I hope he doesnt develope a taste for platies with age! :) Anyways, Goodluck, im sure he will be fun to keep! :D

Yeah I hope so too :D I've just found out s/he's just under 2 months old, about 7 weeks.
