I purchased 2 small auratas's yesturday never owned them before but know they're highly aggressive but the dominant one of the two will chase away other cichlids in the tank but the clown loaches and bala sharks swim free beside him without being chased or attacked? is this because he doesnt see them as a threat at all? im not complaing im just curious.....the bala sharks and loaches are both the same size as him about 2 1/2 inches

Hi Pando,

We've already covered the stocking problems with your tank and adding 2 Auratus makes it even worse. They are extremely aggressive Mbuna which you have added to an already disastrous mix, don't know what else i can say. :(

EDIT - Actually you already had these Auratus (unless you have bought another 2) so the same applies as my reply to your original post.

not everyone has $500 to spend on a tank. i have halved my tank population since then. only have the 2 auratas's 2 saulosi's 1 jewel 1 aceii 1 angel 3 bala sharks 3 clown loaches.

It has nothing to do with money, pando.

If you can't provide an adequate environment for a fish, you should choose a more appropriate species. If you can't be bothered to do a little research, you shouldn't be keeping fish at all. Your fish selections are completely untenable in a 30g... or just about any tank really.

Since money is so tight, what are you going to do when these fish grow up and start dying left and right? Stare at an empty tank?

To be honest I don't think mbuna can effectivly be kept within such small confines as a 30 gallon. As for melanchromis auratus, never put 2 males together as one will die rapidly. I suggest 1m and at least 3F ratio to disperse any aggression between the 3 females. Auratus will not show any sustained aggression towards compatible mbuna like pseudotropheus, cynotilapia to name a couple. Also never keep with other relatives like chipokae etc as deaths will also occur

I'm not gonna go spend hundreds of dollars more for a bigger tank because my $6 Auratas will get bigger, I'll throw him in the trashcan before I do that We'd all love to have huge houses, but we get by in smaller ones. a fish is not going to grow 2" overnight they are only young and cant tell which sex they are yet

Why spend you six dollars on fish that will only die when you could get a job and save for a tank and do things right? How would you like to live in a closet until your 13 when your parents realize you are too big for the closet the kill you or throw you to the streets.. Its not very nice.. Thats what your doing to your fish.. Get rid of the balas and loachs immediately.. They will get even larger faster then the Auratus's

Pando, i know you didn't get into this mess intenionally but that is the wroung attitude. The advice people here are giving you is only in the best interests of the fish and ultimately the best interests of the fish equals the best interests of the fish-keeper.

No-one is suggesting that you buy a bigger tank, if you can't do that you just need to adjust you current stocking levels and remove any incompatibile fish. I know a lot of this sounds negative but it really is very good advice and everyone is only trying to save you inevitable problems that will occur sooner rather than later.

Whether you take any notice of this is up to you.
