So yes, I'm not a great expert on filters, but this really impresses me.

Whisper just gave you one bag of non-seperable items.

This gives you a filter with 3 layers of filtration. "Foam Filter insert, Carbon Insert, and Biomax inseert"

now the reason I didn;t post this in the hardwear section is the "biomax" component of this I thought you all should hear about if you haven't already. Apparently, it increases biological effeciency by 30%, and helps bacteria survive. So, like right now when I'm adding medications, I only need remove the carbon part so it goes through. With whisper I'd have only a worse version of the foam filter.

Also, i'm getting 5.27 total GPH done instead of 3.8 total GPH done.

I feel much better with Aquaclear than whisper. Any other opinions?

i have an aquaclear and the best part about it is its 3 layers as you said. only i do it a little different. instead of only 1 layer of foam, i put 3 blocks of foam in the cartridge. this way i have 3 times as much bacteria area.

ahhhh! so are you saying you cut the long foam thing into 3 ways vertical/horizonatly?

edit:
just saw your reply discus. Yeah. Whisper is what I had, but it kept shutting down and had a few problems, and didn't do enough GPH for me I guess

So I went ahead with this new here Aquaclear, and I like the 3 layer instead of one thing. Also, I like the looks more too. And I enjoy how they BOTH have the flow control.

yes thats true flow control is great at feeding time! i started using aquaclear filters when i got into fishkeeping since i moved i havent found any and the best one i can find is whisper powerfilters so i just use those. But yeah id definitaly recommend aquaclear over anything on the market right know.

awesome.

I think the biomax thing is fairly new though. do you use that at all?

what i meant was that instead of using a foam, carbon and biomax insert as shown here.

i buy 2 more foam blocks and replace the carbon and biomax with foam. this way the entire filter is full of foam for more bacteria surface area.
most fish stores sell 3 packs of foam blocks. so its quite easy and cheap to do.

Welllll, I keep plants, and the carbon probably helps them out....

and the biomax helps bacteria out, does it not?

I have somewhere around a dozen AC's running ATM, if there was a better hob, I would be running something different. Media flexibility is beyond what other filters offer. If you want mechanical, run a couple of sponges, bio, run just bio media. Fill them with floss for polishing, or add some peat for lowering pH. The flexability is similar to a canister, at a hob price.

and also, the carbon I would imagine has to help the plants a little, right? :good:

Nope, does more bad than good for plants. Takes out ferts if you put them in etc. I think.

But I don't use any ferts

Even though I keep a lot of live plants, I just let my fishy poo work as the fert. So wouldn't carbon still be a better answer?

Also you don't have any hard to keep plants. Why would it help?

Next bit is a rough idea - The carbon will loose effect after about a week. When all the ions are 'used up'. This means it either dumps what it's collected back into the tank or just holds it.

hmmmm... that stinks... but I thought plants breathed carbon, so it might help a bix :X
