Hi,

I have been trying to get my Java fern and some Ricca to attach to some of my bogwood. I am just trying to find out the best way to do it. I have been attaching them with cotton thread bound round the bogwood to hold it in position but it just is not holding. Either the plant comes loose or the cotton breaks in the water (unsure why).

What does you guys do to attach them?? Any tricks for me?

Cheers in advance.

Craig

Same here, I use cotton. Maybe it's either your method. Or, perhaps its the cotton. Maybe a sub-standard stuff?
Perhaps your fish are being disruptive when its 'lights out'. Maybe try again but in a 'plant only' tank?

All this said. mine hasn't had time to take root yet. Mine might very well do the same

riccia will not attach its self to anything, its a floating plant so will need to be kept down with a net.

with my java fern i've used garden wire (metal wire with green plastic around it) left it for a month or two then cut it off, no problems here :D

oh and cotten will rot in the water so thats possibly why its coming loose. Or a fish could have nipped it.

some of the leaves on the java furn will turn brown when its rooting to something

I would be careful about what wire you use, especially if you have shrimp or snails in there (copper wire will most likely kill them). One thing I have used in the past is very fine fishing line. It is almost invisable in the water and it doesnt rot.

Also fishing line is also an option. I used this as myself. Just make sure you don't leave any loops hanging around, or the fish might get caught. Riccia you will need to put into a net. It will grow out of it netting and stay in place. Though when it gets long, it tends to break free for the surface.

Thanks guys. I will look into the fishing wire idea. I never realised that about ricca!! May have to buy a wee net for it then. Or give up.

Care to suggest any other plants that will attach to the bog wood?

Cheers

Hi

Java fern will attach to your bogwood quite easily. I tend to use tweezers to 'poke' the roots into small crevices in the bogwood. They root quickly if you don't have nosy fish digging them out

Riccia is another matter, I'll leave that to the experts !!

Good luck

java ferns and anubias can be attached with eleastic bands its far easier than cotton :good:
