I have kept my anubia planted in my sand (rhimzone above sand, don't worry :p). but I have been thinking of attaching it to some wood to get it in a more shady area. The plant has tons of roots... tons. If I tie the rhimzone to the wood, what should I do with the roots? Trim them back a little, or wind them around the wood as well?

Jen, I trimmed back the roots on my Nana before trying to attach it, mainly because with the amount of roots it had I couldn't get it anywhere near the wood.
As far as I understand it, trimming back the roots a bit will encourage it to grow....
Trimming the roots wont harm it anyway.................

yep i slashed 3 nana's into 10 nana's last night. trimmed the roots to about 3cm then tied onto the wood with cotton thread. the roots will sort them selves out in time. dont worry.

my nana wont cling to the drifwood i used... i think the driftwood was too smooth or something .... anyway im not really experienced with anubias sp. and my nana was only given to me by a friend.... jimboo how do you know where to cut the anubias to make more anubiases(?sp?) i think my anubias is ready for mass production :D hehe

i was going to write a pruning thread but the damn camera was playing up at 4am this morning and i really couldn't be bothered to sort it out.

basically just cut the rhyozome (sp?). i normally leave at least 2 leaves and 3/4 roots between cuts. just cut the rhyozome between the leaf nodes and trim the roots to about 3cm. i use a razor blade from my algae scraper, seems to do the trick. if you crush the rhyozome when cutting it will die.

i've got 6 out of one plant in the past. i'll post pics in my journal when the camera's sorted

I only have 7 leaves (I have a lanceolata... the leaves are around 8 inches tall from rhimzone to tip), they take a while to grow... its at least 3 weeks before I see a new leaf. I don't think I'll be splitting it just yet... I only have one spot to put it for the time being. I'll have to get a razor blade... we have some exacto-knives... but they are general use so I don't want to tempt introducing something nasty to the water.

3 weeks seems a long time, try an experiment first. cut off the ugliest leaf as close to the rhyozome as possible but dont damage the rhyozome itself and i'd expect a new one to appear within a week. pruning promotes growth remember. try that first before cutting it up.

oh and how many times can i mispell rhyozome in one day? sorry, spelling isn't my strongest point.

probably best to keep the knives seperate although i'm the worst for putting out a cigarette and diving in the tank with stinky fingers. then putting my java fern in a saucepan to keep it wet, prune with a potato peeler and then move plants between tanks just so they all get infected with the same nasties....

then the misses gets the air freshner out and drenches the flat in it while all the tank lids are off. thats quite a common catalyst for a tense evening..

tempting fate here but everything's been fine so far.. i'm not suggesting you follow my lazy methods by any means but i do feel people take these things a little too seriously. unless you've been digging the garden with your knives i wouldn't worry about it myself

AGAIN UP TO YOU THOUGH. PROBABLY BEST NOT TO I SUPPOSE

ditto on the cigarette thing, jimbooo.....never noticed any problems so far but probably not recommended!
The air freshner thing made me laugh....there are so many things that can trigger a domestic when fish tanks are involved! Don't hoover near the tanks, dear....i'll do it later with a dustpan and brush, honest!
You know it's true! ;)

LOL i prefer dont hoover there dear you'll fry yourself as i've just dropped 10 gallons on the carpet...

oh and i was not popular this morning when i climbed into bed at 5am after a strip down (the tank that is..) apparently i was banging and crashing about all night.. cant say i noticed myself ZZZZzzzzzz......
