Today I was exchanging a juvi jaguar cichlid I recently bought because he was getting too nippy with my bichir (I like him a lot and don't want him to have to be pestered all day,) and I had to deal with the newest (and goofiest) employee at my LFS. She doesn't even like fish and doesn't know much about them beyond her basic training (which is pretty much "cichlids on the right, everything else on the left,) but she likes to pretend she's knowledgeable anyway. I explained why I was returning the jag, and she asked me "well, did you have him in with other cichlids?"
This is code for "I don't know what a bichir is, but is it a cichlid?"
For the record, he was the only cichlid in the tank.

The next question was "Did you have him in a proper cichlid environment?"
...I wasn't aware that all cichlids prefered the same conditions
To her, cichlid = African cichlid. I just told her that yes, he was kept in the right environment... not that I can think of a reason why that should effect my returning him... I was already told over the phone by another employee that they'd be happy to take him ????

It's a small LFS, and she has been there long enough to know that there's no need to pester me about the way I house my fish, but at least she's trying to give advice... albeit not exactly correct advice :p

I'm hoping she'll be leaving for the summer and I can steal her job :shifty:
Come on, I'm better qualified anyway!

Good luck on stealing the job :D
I've got exactly the same situation at my lfs, i want a job there cos i know 10times more than all the staff working there at the moment but i'd feel guilty grassing in this girl who sounds exactly like the same lass you are talking about, so i suppose i'll just bide my time... :shifty:

You should go into the store next time when that other girl isn't there, start up a conversation with one of the manager type people (if you can) talk about fish in general, really technical stuff, then with a smile and a good attitude and ask for an application or something. If they're hiring people like that bimbo that you talked to then I'm sure you'll defenitely have a chance there.
