I popped into our local Pets Unlimited yesterday to see if they had any Pygmies in stock. The staff are comparably knowledgable, which usually makes it nice to talk with them about my tanks etc. but they were very honest when they explained they couldn't help me, since the distributor used by the franchise just ships them an "assortment" of corydoras, and when they're all about the same size it's a little trickier to tell if they're looking at full grown pygmies or juvies of another type.

The ones I looked at most closely (about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch) were completely adorable and did look rather like Habrosus to me, both in terms of colouring and shape, but that might just have been wishful thinking on my part. Is there any definite way to be sure of what I'm taking home, or should I just ask if I can bring them back if they grow too large to be healthy in the tank?

I would ask if I could bring them back if they got to big. Are they anyway you could get a picture?. And see if anyone know what they are and how big they get.

why not look on the website corydoras world.just the site to help with cory's.

I did look at this website. It has a picture for almost every type of cory they list, and while none of them look identical, some (Difluviatilis, Evelynae and Habrosus, to name a few) are fairly close. It's hard to tell because I wasn't able to see them very close up.

I did consider taking pictures next time I'm in the store, but I don't have a camera phone and I've already gotten in trouble once for having an actual camera in there, so I'm not so sure that would work ;)

What I may do is ask if I can bring them back if they get bigger, then take them home, take pics and post them. If anybody can confirm they are or are not any variety of dwarf cory, I'll either keep them, or take them back and ask for a refund or store credit, at least, dpending on what the verdict is. They tend to be fairly reasonable at that particular store, so it's probably going to be the best solution, if there's no definite way for me to tell for sure.

maybe they would put one in one of those holding tanks for you,(the ones that hang on the tank) so you could get a closer look.

Thank you both for the advice; I did consider asking them to isolate them so I could get a better look, but the problem is I haven't enough experience with cories myself to be able to trust my own 'diagnosis' :*)

I'll definitely take a look at that site; I'm especially keen to see pics of juvies if possible, because if they won't give me a return guarentee it may end up that I have to figure this out on my own.
