I have noticed 2 new residents in my aquarium this morning, a baby assassin snail and a hydra. I wonder if anyone could answer a few questions?

I purchased 3 assassin snails, but the baby was a surprise because I had been led to believe that they were unlikely to breed. Do assassin snails eat their own young?

The hydra was spotted clinging onto the front glass. I have no real intention of breeding my fish, so the hydra preying on fry is not a concern to me at the moment. Would I be correct in assuming that there is no other concern about the presence of hydra? Will it, in fact be a tasty snack for my fish?

Finally, will the assassins eat the hydra?

i had about 10 assassins but only 3 now, guess you are very lucky to have a baby! as for hydra yes they are fine to have. there is a pinned thread on heere somewhere which lists all the tank hitchhikers. you will find them in that. they are supposedly biologically immortal!

If I remember correctly, assassins will breed in tanks and will eat their own. I just spotted my first baby this weekend in my 45 gal. These guys like to burrow and that is normally how the young can survive- by digging. A sand substrate is ideal for this but they can manage in smaller gravel as well.

There's definitely more than one. I did a water change/gravel vac on the day that I spotted the young 'un and ended up with two of them clinging to the bottom of the bucket. I put them into a different tank and have since spotted another one in my main tank. They are almost too small to recognise by eye, so I guess if I spot one there must be more that I haven't spotted yet?

im jealous lol. my shrimp and corys breed well but no luck with the assassins...

I used to have 6 assassin snails. Now I'm not sure, but probably 3 figures. They take longer to breed than many snails, the young take 6months+ to reach maturity, and they are definitely not predated upon by the adults.

Hi,
Assassin snails will breed in a tank but just not as quickly as other snails. This is why they are so ideal. Spixi snails eat hydra, not sure about assassin snails though. Gourami also like them. Hydra, like you said are harmful to fry/small young fish but they are also harmful to shrimp too.
