Hi all,

I bought my 90g today, and got a free magazine with it. It's called Tropical Fish Hobbyist. Anyway, I was browsing through, and they have a great article on Goodeids in it. It might be worth looking at for all of you interested in the 'wilder' types of Livebearers. It's basically an introduction to them, and how to keep them and such.

Anyway, just wanted to give all my Livebearer friends a heads-up. :)

Is it an American magazine,Annastasia?
Id love to have a go at some of the more unusual livebearers but the problem is where to get them.None of the lfs shops have anything other than the usual livebearers.Suppose you cant blame them as they are all small buisnesses and concentrate on the bread and butter fish
You must be dead excited about your new tank. :hyper:

I really don't know. I couldn't tell you if you guys got it over there or not. Sorry! Their office is in New Jersey though, so it probably is American.

Have you looked online for some of the wilder types? I'm sure someone in the UK must sell them.

I was so excited about my new tank, until I realized it had a chip in it. Now I have to wait until next Thursday for a new one. UGH! :X

Yes, it is! But I can wait a week longer, if it means a tank 3 times my largest one now.

Nevermind me on the article, it's in the free 'gift issue'. :X You still might be able to find it though.

Oh bless you, what a kind person you are! I would love that, I'm very interested in unusual livebearers. I've never heard of that magazine here, don't think you can get it. I saw my first goodeids at the weekend (in the Porstmouth aquarium) and they are wonderful-looking things, so different from other livebearers.

Hello all --

Tropical Fish Hobbyist ("TFH") is an American magazine, but it is available in the UK. You are most likely to find it in tropical fish shops and large newsagents, for example the ones at mainline railway stations. The British equivalent is Practical Fishkeeping magazine, commonly called "PFK".

I write for them both, and TFH is publishing my brackish water book later this year. They're both nice magazines but have somewhat different flavours. What I do like about TFH is its format; it's got a nice, glossy quality and usually has excellent photography.

Goodeids are cool fish and worth trying out. In the UK, species of Ameca and Xenotoca seem to be quite easy to obtain. Wildwoods and Wholesale Tropicals regularly have them in stock. The rarer species can be ordered or (perhaps more easily and inexpensively) bought at auctions or through livebearer clubs. You can join these online to find out more. See the "unusual livebearers" article I wrote a few days back.

If you go to Amazon and then do a search using the term "livebearer" or "livebearing", you'll find lots of books on these fish. I bought two, secondhand, for about 4 UKP each this week. I definitely recommend Amazon for obtaining specialist aquarium books. The prices are usually very good.

Cheers,

Neale
