Arrggh! Emergency

Definitely do a water change. Make a makeshift syphon out of extra airline tubing, or just take little bits out with a small container and check for fry. If you're careful, you'll be fine. It's more important you get the nitrites down for the fry.

And no, do not use normal table salt. That has added in additives that aren't going to be good. You need to use Aquarium salt.

Damm - I already used a small amount of table salt (about 1/2 teaspoon) Hopefully this won't be enough to do any damage.

I'll do a little water change now...
Finger's cross I don't do any damage.

Table salt fine i use it, it's ok in small doses, we all have different views on salt.

I agree, in small amounts it's okay, but I'd never use it in larger amounts like when treating for ich or anything. :)

Timmy - Keep doing small ones every few hours until it gets down to an okay level. Also, I wouldn't add in too much salt for too long. It's not the initial dose that's going to hurt the CAE, but the longer time effects.

I agree and increase aeration if you can. Good luck.

OK - thanks Guys...

I think this is what I am going to do:
- Do a 50% water change every day for the next week or at least until my NitrIte levels are down
- I will use a gravel vac for my water changes like I always do, except i'll put it right near the bottom of the tank in the hope that no fry get sucked up it
- I'll obviously check the used water for Fry

And I won't add anymore salt!

I saw about 7 of them this morning and most of them had something to eat so I'm confident that they will do OK.
Can you see any problems with this action plan?

I'd step it up to twice a day, if you can.

For the fry, another tip is to shine a flashlight near the tank. Most of them will either go towards it, or away from it, and you can vacuum where they aren't. Also, if you're worried, make a small siphon out of airline tubing. Fry can't fit in there, and it works. It's just slower.

Sorry, R.I.P. guppies are very sensitive to water quality.

Sorry it turned into a disaster. R.I.P.
