so i poured a bag of each into separate containers to rinse out but it's still cloudy. Does just a good rinse and swirl do the job, or do i need to keep rinsing this stuff until all the pasty cloudiness goes away?

it can take awhile to get sand clean

Yip, rinse it until its clean or the gunk will just clog your filter. Might take a while but its worth it.

Cichlids, but still researching what kind. Leaning towards the electric yellows and blues and bumble bee's.

yes keep washing the sand/gravel until the water runs clear. and that means that its going to take a very very long time.
