Last night I set up my 55g, and because of space problems I had to break down the 20g the fish had been in, so they ended up spending the night in a bucket while the 55g heated up. I only put 10cm of water in the bucket, because I knew they could jump, and they had to clear the side of the bucket which was another 25 cm.

This morning both my beautiful opaline gourami and my crazy lil albino rainbow shark were on the floor. The two cichlids in the bucket with them are fine.

Sigh, I hate when this happens

There's no point in paying money for a bucket with a lid... Just find something that would be suitable to cover it like the bluefire suggested... or even some mosquito netting!

At the time I kinda figured that 4 cm fish, in only 10 cm of water, there was no way they could leap the 30 cm side of the bucket. I've never known fish to jump that high

you'd be surprised how far fish can jump when they want to

i always cover any bucket of fish with a dishcloth for this very reason. :/ i also hate to tell you this, but for the sake of future reference... leaving that many semi-aggressive fish in that small of a body of water may actually have precipitated the jumpers. all of the fish you mentioned are territorial and i would not have been surprised if there had been some squabbling involved.

sorry for your losses.
