I HAVE A 55 GALLON WITH A COUPLE OSCARS COUPLE PLECOS I CICHLID A PUFFER AND A CAT FISH. I MOVED MY TANK FROM MY ROOM TO THE LIVING ROOM AND STARTED ALL OVER WITH NEW WATER. USED START RIGHT WATER TREATMENT, THREW IN A ICK TABLET AND SOME CLOUDYNESS DROPS AND IT WAS PERFECT. NEVER SEEN IT SO CLEAN. CUT OFF A CHUNK OF ZUCHINI FOR MY PLECOS AND WENT TO BED WOKE UP THE NEXT DAY AND MY TANK WAS SO GREEN I COULD NOT SEE THROUGH TO THE OTHER SIDE. I DONT HAVE AND PLANTS IN MY TANK OH AND ALSO I FED MY PUFFER A CHUNK OF SQUID FOR SALTWATER CARNOVORES. I WANT A CRYSTAL CLEAR TANK AGAIN BUT I DONT WANT TO MOVE IT. AS OF TONIGHT I PUT A SMALL EIGHT INCH SPIDER PLANT IN THE TANK HOPING TO ASSIST BUT I DONT KNOW THAT ITS 100 PERCENT SAFE FOR MY FISH. I NEED SOME ADVICE PLEASE.

............. Kay, first lets turn the caps lock OFF.............

Then, my first question is what kind of filter are you using and did you do anything to it during the move(for example change the inserts)?

My advice is contact a mod and have them move this topic up to "New to Hobby". Then take the poor spider plant out of the tank. It won't harm your fish, but it will drown in there. I'm not quite sure you what you were expecting it to do anyways......

You have green water, also known as an algae bloom. It normally doesn't happen in a stable tank. So I'm guessing you might of messed up the cycle during your move. If you don't know what I mean by cycle then I suggest you google search "cycling an aquarium". Do you have a test kit for the water? Any of the fish behaving differently than normal?

Last of all, why did you add a ick tablet? do the fish have ick?

Im using a 30-60gallon tetra whisper, i didnt clean the filters after starting with new water, added ick tablet just in case, only the roots are in the water and it will do just fine, and im expecting it to suck up nitrogen and oxygen thus depriving the algae. the fish are acting fine, did a 40 percent water change this morning. I do have one sickly 16 in pleco. he hasnt eaten in a couple weeks but since this algea bloom he seems to be doing better. Ive never had an algea bloom in my tank i just want to get rid of it should i throw on another filter?

p.s.

I cleaned the filters and no i dont have a test kit. i take my water to the pet store to get it tested and its always perfect. Ive always had clean water. even when i first started it was a little cloudy but after that was perfect but then i moved it down stairs next to a sliding glass door. No direct sunlight but does get light, suns on the other side of the house all day.

Unless its an exaggeration or there is 10WPG over the tank the water won't go from crystal clear to green water over night!!

Definately won't happen that quick with new water!!!

Is it actually green or does it have a light green tinge.

Water changes will help with removing it until you find out what it actually is.
