I got a pair of fighting fish yesterday and they are in an 11L tank witd rocks and water lettuce for plants and decor.
The water stats are.......

26 degrees C
pH:8
Nitrite:0
Amonia:0
Nitrate:10
Under gravel filter

The male has been making the odd bubble on the surface but not making a bubble nest, he takes the odd breath of air and makes 1 bubble every now and then.
He has been showwing off his fins to the female and flapping about by her as if he wants to mate with her but i have no experience with betta.
Here are some pics.....

Do yoo think this means they will probably breed??

Hi Joe

You first need to seperate the male and female preferbly into two tanks and feed them for about two weeks on high protein food like

betta pro
bloodworm
daphnia

This is called conditioning (getting them ready for spwaning)

After two weks you should notice the male blowing a bubble nest / the female showing barrs on her body & a big belly.

you can now put the male into the spawn tank which needs to be big enough for the female to hide and small enough so they dont keep losing each other. (the spawn tank should be bare bottomed, with a couple of plants and hidey holes for the female and somewhere for the male to make his nest i use a polystyrene cup cut length ways. you should also add betta spa or IAL

let the male investigate the spawn tank and then put the female in a coke bottle (with the bottom cut off) so that the male can see her but not get to her.

hopefully the male should get to work blowing a bubble nest the female should be trying to get out bowing her head. when you feel the time is right release the female and wait. keep checking up on them but dont disturb them too much. let nature take its course it could happen in a few hours or even up to a week

This is a very quick guide to spwaning and there are alot more details to think about - have you got a grow out tank space for splitting up troublesome males when they get bigger , time to do water changes.

i would read the pinned topics other wise you could end up with dead bettas or damaged ones.

hope this brief reply has helped a little

Good morning.

Ok first off. Rule number one is never keep male and female bettas together, unless you are intending on spawning then. If you are she needs to be seperated from him for 2 weeks and both fish need to be conditioned on a high protien diet. After this she needs to be reintroduced into his tank but behind a partition on in a cut off coke bottle that is stood upright in the water. When she bars up and he has built a nest you can then and only then let her out and actually swim with him. He will chase and nip her but in the end they will spawn and as soon as they do you MUST remove her again and leave him to tend the eggs.

If you intend to spawn do you have homes for 100+ fry and also do you have enough jars to house possibly that many male fry as they will need to be seperated at 2 months. Also you will need a stock of microworms, BBS, grindal worms to feed them on and a grow out tank of 40lts

Secondly alot of people will advise you not to breed VT's as beautifal as they are they are hard to rehome and alot of people hate the idea of them ending up in a pet shop in a cup.

Sorry to sound negative about the whole thing but i have given you that basic facts. There is alot to spawning bettas, its rewarding but not for the faint of heart. Please research all aspects of it before you go ahead

Edit: Hmmm got beaten to it, dang

Ok thanks very much for the replies.

I will try what you both advised me to do :)

Cheers, Joemuz
