Alrite guys,

ive had 2 angel fish in my tank for sometime now and theyve never shown signs of aggression to anyone except a smaller angel i added a few weeks ago but even that only lasted a day whilst they got the pecking order sorted.

in the last hour ive noticed that anyone who swims in the middle of my tank quickly gets shown the door!

there also pecking at my amazon swords in that area alot too.

thing is, i didnt even kno i had a pair!

was starting to get suspicious when i noticed one has the bump on its head and the curved fin and the other doesnt but is there anyway sure way to tell what there up too???

EDIT - jus seen the pinned topic, sorry guys.

still seems strage how ive had them a while and this is the first time theyve done anything like it.......

is it cos they have more space in my new tank?

They only spawn when they get big enough and if you have a male and female and if they don't feel stressed or frightened by the other fish and the reason they were pecking at the plants is because they are cleaning it so they can lay their eggs on it. If you don't want babys or your other fish to get their fins nipped pretty bad I'd advise that once they get done spawning to remove the eggs because they become even more mean when they have something to protect.

Mine are doing the same exact thing right now, getting ready to spawn. :hey:

Oh, also check to see if you can spot any signs of breeding tubes.. they should be visible right now.

They wont damage your other fishes fins but they will chase them away. There are all sorts of ways that people say are signs of a male or female but really until the pair off you can never know for sure.

I have a pair that spawn every 3-4 weeks but its no major deal, the other fish get herded to the other end of the tank for 2 days then the pair eat the eggs and order is restored.

Does sound like they are spawning though (or at least getting ready to) whta sort of size are they?

i think they were just in a funny mood or something last night cos the aggression soon stopped after i fed them.

(always feed my fish about an hour before lights out)

how bigger tank do a pair of spawning angels need???

i have a hex tank they could go in if they show signs again.

theyve been in there before and seemed happy.

The size of your tank is fine for them, you dont need a bigger one.

How big are the fish themselves? The aggression may well have just been them enfocing their pecking order.

sorry, im sure i edited my last post to say that.

there about 5-6 inches from top to bottom of fin.

there fine again now.

pretty sure it wasnt jus the pecking order cos ive never seen them like it.

It could be them selecting a mate, they will charge toward eachother and look like they are fighting but really they are testing eachother to make sure their prospective partner is strong and healthy making them a suitable mate.

Keep an eye on them as it may well be that they will pair off soon.

Have you seen them face eachother with their fins stretched out looking like they are 'shaking' at eachother?

no they do that to me lol!!

when ever food is near or when i wake up in the morning and they see me move in bed they come dashing over and wiggle like mad (again for food).

they showed the same behaviour again this evening.

how long are the breeding tubes?

they both had what looked like they were GONNA be breeding tubes but they were only a cm long if that.

well big mick i hope your about somewhere lol

they laid there eggs on a nice big leaf and are currently fanning and looking afta them.

think the female is still even trying to lay.

assuming they dont now get eaten or nefin.

what can i expect over the next few days and what should i do to help???

ive jus got my hex tank in and set it up and im matchin the temp of my big tank in there.

jus incase i need it for anything.

I wouln't mind my angelfish spawning but the only problem is that I would not know where to put the fry!! I don't have an apropriate grow-out tank... Guess that is why I am going with altums so that I won't have to worry about waking up to find eggs!! :D I do have a koi angelfish though.... I might breed him soon.... I hope your angelfish will produce some nice looking fry!
