Hey, I bought some shrimp at the weekend but the tank they were in only labelled them as shrimp. They are around 1.5" to 2" and are see through. Ive taken some pics for you to ID.

These are the shrimp I have. Are they Ghost Shrimp?

Looks like a yellow-nosed shrimp to me, Xiphocaris elongata, or one of the similar species.

So no, it's not a ghost, but it should act like one. If you got them cheaply then I'm jealous.

I have to say that me and Three-fingers was having this conversation recently and we thought that the pictures could be of the genus Macrobrachium. I seem to have picked up some of these. Be wary though as they can kill/eat fish. Mine has had a go at an ill guppy and also has eaten one of my cherries (I dont know if it was already dead or not). Only realised as the offending shrimp had a cherry head sticking out of its mouth.

Im thinking you could be right. In another tank at the LFS, a shrimp has a penguin tetra and was eating it. The assistant said that the shrimp must have caught it and that the tetra didnt die of disease. At the time, I just thought the assistant was lying but in hindsight this could have happened. I think they could have a go at the harlequins as some are barely over half an inch. I havent seen any sign of an aggresive nature but ill keep an eye on them. They are great looking shrimp but there is no way they can stay if they start picking of my fish.

Yeah they are little bu**ers. If they can catch it I think they would try to eat them.

Now I have two shrimp that look great but could be eating things they should not. Luckily I have taken out all my little fish and my babies are in a breeding trap.

Well ive just watched the shrimp make way for the danio and harlequin so they can eat. The shrimp dont seem interested in my fish for now. My Harlequin are about half an inch at the moemnt and the shrimp allow them to eat first

Its quite hard to tell if they are red nose or macro shrimp from the photos, the way to tell would be from the length of the claws. If they are about the same size or longer than their legs it will be a Macro species, if they are shorter it will probably be the red nose shrimp (or a similar species). :good:

If it is anyhelp, they have big black bug like eyes.

I cant really tell if their claws are longer or not. Their arms are fairly long but the claws are very small.

My ghost's claws are like that.

If you say that they shy away from the fish I would just keep a very close eye on them for now. Hopefully they'd end up being one of the species that behaves.
