In my local LFS today i saw what was called a Fish R Fun aqua box which is a 1.3 litre box with no filter or heater and a LED light marketed as a home for a Siamese Fighter/Betta, would people actually buy this and try to put a fish in it?

Here is the same product

Yes they are real.

I've seen betta cubes that are like 5 litres of water and a light.

I don't agree with them and am still waiting for a law that limits fish and tank sizes.

These have been around for a while. People do get them. I have always wondered about this topic. Knowing what I know now, its not good for bettas to be in these small homes but I used to keep them in standard fish bowls with no heat, filtration or air. I feel so sorry for that but the education is just not there and I really wonder why? I would think that pet stores would make money if they insisted that bettas needed better conditions.

I have used the one ninjouzata posted, or one like it. It was convenient for me and I honestly didn't think the bettas minded it. In that small of an environment without a heater they were very very lethargic - completely different fish. I know it wasn't good for them now. But I have actually seen smaller tanks.. will have to grab a picture next time i see them again

They have betta cubes at my LFS that can't hold more than a quart of water. Why? People would get so much more enjoyment from having a real setup when the fish would be happy and healthy!

I expect it's because a lot, if not most of our fishing goods are coming from places like China, and they are hoping, (how can I say this politically correctly), they are hoping we will buy other fish things popular in China and the far East.

Probably a number of things, how easy it is to make them. Also the fact that the "ease" of taking a betta could appeal to virtually anyone. People on this forum would be surprised at how incredibly lazy some people are and how having to do one little chore can be the difference between buying or not buying.

I've seen 4 inch cubes for sale at one of my LFS and labeled as "Ideal for Bettas and tetras". Saddening.

Indeed when people learn about the chemistry & biology involved you get threw camps in my experience:

Those that go with the flow.
Those that ignore it all.
Those that turf it in.

Knowledge is power... too bad there is a sucker born every minute!
