I have a platy that gave birth and I'm trying to figure out who the male fish would be....I don't have any other platies and got her about 7 months ago, so she wouldn't still be giving birth from getting pregnant at the store.
Are swordtails platies and then the swordtail that I have could be the dad?

Thanks!!

It's right that they will store sperm for fertilisation if their are no other males around, and generally it's about 6 months.
However it may be longer, if she dose not give birth for 3-4 months then she's defiantly out of stored sperm.

It's possible she has crossed with the Swordtail's, as the very closely related. They are already crossed to share colour types, so just see what the fry look like as they mature in the next 3-12 months (Yes some males do take that long)

Platys and swords both belong to the genus Xiphophorus and can interbreed.

Swordtails and Platies can interbreed.
I mean, if you look close they look pretty similar minus the tailfins. :)
