For fry and hospital tanks, yes, but for anything else, no. I would use a HOB or a canister.

What size is your tank?
Elite, I believe, is a decent brand though I have no experience with them.

They work fine if you provide it with enough flow power (using a powerhead instead of an airstone), only problem is they can be quite ugly.

I had to use a pair on a 30 gallon with shell dwellers for a while and they worked out fine. I was able to get a cannister filter set up and they stiill run as a supplement/back up for the main filter. I also use one on a 10 gallon for growing Java Moss.

get an aquaclear instead of that
