I' ve been doing my research about oscars and im really intrested in one.

But i keep getting different opinions on their character/personality. Are they really considered under water puppies? very affectionate, always beggin for food like dogs?

I have a 35g, a 30g, a 10 and a big pond in the backyard and i think that when you have little fish its not as fun compared to BIG fish in a tank which you get more attached to (in my opinion).

My 35g is probably my biggest efforts as a aquascaper and just general efforts at making a great tank but it has little schools and a few fish but its just not that intresting compared to our big pleco that is about 7 inches and is just great fun to watch, or the goldfish in the pond who are 6-8 inches.

Well anywhoooo, i was just thinking would it be possible to purchase an oscar and put him in a 30-40g tank and see if i like him or maybe its not the fish for me and if i am still intrested i can get him the 75g that he deserves.

I think it sounds like im sounding selfish/ignorant but im not trying to be; no really!(sorry  ) i figure 30-40g would be sufficient for the oscar for maybe 6 months max.

Is this a heartless act or would it be a good idea?

P.S: sorry if the thread is confusing

id say more like 3-4 months and its not advised to buy a fish with *plans* to get a bigger tank after.

why not get the big tank anyway cos youve sed you like big fish.

you can either get your oscar then or check them out at the LFS to see if you like them.

personally i think there definately worth it.

but only if you can house it properly.

i had my O in a 30 G but that was for less than a month and i had money in hand for my new tank.

Oscars are deffinately worth it, they're awesome. Get the bigger tank. I'm upgrading soon.

oscars are really great and if i could have kept mine in its 75 gallon i would have, but other things happened :(

and yes, they are like a puppy dog, they will follow you back and forth which ever way you are walking its so cute :D

alright sounds like ill be looking at that tank, i have the funds for it, but the guy thats selling it to me doesnt have a lid for it, is a lid necessary for an oscar, im pretty sure it is but im just asking.

and i think a lid can be made easy two right?

Oh yeah, they need a lid, preferably a heavy, secure one. I hear mine jumping and smacking into his lid regularly.

yup they're jumpers, you need to watch otu for it. Mine lets me know if he's hungry by jumping up and banging the lid
