I am a super newbie and am a hard time finding out if platys just tend to hang around at the top, I just had a tetra die and this fish is not acting like that one was

PLEASE HELP A NEWBIE FISH LOVER

I had this happen a few years ago when I first kept platies. I thought one was sick, but in a couple of days, she had babies!

I guess I was more relieved than excited at the time. I'm not really an expert on livebearers, so I can't say this is the definite answer.

How can you tell if they are pregnet? actually how can you tell if they are boys or girls?

One of them is acting really werid, but maybe I am just so new to the fish thing that I don't understand thats just how they act

Thank you, so I have 2 males and 1 female and it seems to be one of the males that is acting strange, although he seems to be much better this morning.................Myabe I am just over reacting

I am having a similar problem. 3 days ago I had 6 red wag plattys, but one started to behave as you described. After a while it would lay motionless and appear quite dead, but after a little while it would go crazy, right up to the top of the tank, and the cycle repeated until it died. A second platty is following suit now.

Have you checked the Ph of your water. I have since found the mine is quite low, which may be the cause..

Since you`ve only had the tank for a week you`ll need to do 25% water changes DAILY until it`s cycled or add Bio-spira which will cycle it in a couple hours. Without doing either the fish will die from ammonia poisoning.
