Hi,

I'm new to keeping tropical fish and recently got 3 guppies and 3 platies, 2F and 1M of each. I knew they would breed and I wanted that as I've always wanted to have baby fish, however I wasn't prepared for a week after getting them for the platy to give birth. I found 2 platy fry after emptying the tank to about an inch to rescape the tank. They are now in a breeder sitting in the newly setup tank.

The problem I have is that I know they will probably give birth again in the next few days and if not, they will in roughly 4-6 weeks. My main issue is that I think my guppies are pregnant also. Could anyone tell me how pregnant and when I should expect them so I can move them to the birthing box?

I'm really anxious on this, been checking on them every 30min to see if they have given birth, just need someone to give me a rough estimate or tell me I'm being a fool and they aren't pregnant lol. I'll be happy if they are pregnant but being new I have no realy idea what to look for, they are showing signs of it but I'm just not sure.

Need some advice ASAP, please :)

Here's some pics -

Here's my little platy babies :)

Thanks for your help 5teady, I setup a 60l fry tank today and put my 2 platy fry in there. The tank previously had 2 Oranda in it which have now moved home as I've gone completely tropical fish, the Elite Stingray 15 is still in the tank, should I cover the intake on this at all, or will it be ok as standard?

Cheers

In my new fry tank, also 60l it has an internal filter too, but a Jewel one. i'm leaving the fry in the breeder tank until they're a litttttle bit bigger in order to avoid the filter!

It's up to you though, can you adjust the current on the filter? And as for the intake some people use tights or nets to cover it...but keep an eye on it.

Well I left the Platy fry in the breeder after finding them for around a week before letting them loose into the fry tank, mainly because I still had the Oranda in the fry tank lol.

I can't adjust the flow but I think I'll either put some foam from an old filter over it, or put some sort of really finely holed material so water gets through but the fry dont.

One other thing I've been wondering... I have a TetraTec EX1200 canister filter on the main community tank on full whack. If I miss the birth and the fry end up in the main tank, what are the chances I'll loose them due to the filter, and how do I catch the fry if they do pop in the main tank?

they seem so young, i don't think they are ready to drop they are skinny still.

Just a word of warning about separating the females into a breeding tank.

A while back I put 2 heavily pregnant females (one a guppy and one endler)and they were so stressed by the whole process that between them they aborted about 15-20 fry. This was a floating tank and since this time I only put newly born fry into these to keep them away from hungry adults until such time as they are too big to fit in their mouths.....

Digging up my thread but didn't want to start another one.

I've decided to move the female guppies over to the fry tank very soon and let them swim around in there. How would I go about getting the fry out of harms way if/when they are born?

Pics of my fry tank are here - My Fry Tank (Public Flickr Page)

Any help or advice would be great as the guppies are looking about ready to pop.

Cheers
Adam
