I got a suggestion for dwarf gouramis in my tank as buddies for my platies, but would one male hurt my platy with a fin defect? If he decided to attack her, she could get away quick enough but wouldn't be able to defend herself for more than a minute.

DG's can be aggresive, but only to other gouramis or surface dwelling fish, in a 20 gallon with platies and cories, then it shouldn't be a problem
PS:make sure that you purchase a healthy gourami from a reputable fish store, preferably a high quality breeder as these fish are most oftenly inbred so much that they have become very weak, and susceptible to dwarf gourami disease

Don't platies qualify as surface fish? Or is it just larger surface fish that they pick on?

i wouldnt qualify platies as surface dwelling fish, more like bettas, hatchet fish and other gouramis. but if your platies stay near the top then you might need to add some oxygen into the tank.
