I'd like to get Angels for my 40L tank. I heard they get big, but will they get big in a smallish tank? I heard fish grow with the size of the tank. If in a small tank, they won't grow as big.

Any comments?

Angels need to be in a tank that gives them 10 gallons per fish, and the tank should be at least 18" tall. It's not a good idea to keep fish in tanks that are too small for them, it will stunt their growth and cause internal organ problems :)

sadly i would have to say no, angels should not be housed in a 10 gallon
there simply isn't enough room to swim
as for the only growing to the size of the tank...
well in some cases that is a myth and the fish will get crowded and lethargic (causeing stress) and in other cases that is true
although when it does happen and the fish stay small it is called "stunting"
in these cases the internal orgens continue to grow as the body stays the same size causeing deformity and shortened lives
MUCHO DANO!
(much damage)

sorry,
maybe in the future you'll get another tank :shifty:

Bummer, I thought so, but they are such nice looking fish. Any suggestions for other interesting looking fish?

It's for a tank on my desk at work. Everyone is interested in my tank and I want to keep to excitement going. I can't believe people who sit around me don't actually keep fish!!! I mean....whats wrong with them?

The tank is about 40cm W x 25cm D x 50cm H.

Wow you have a tank in your office?!?! I envy you! :D But i think I would be distracted by my fish if I had a tank at work (definately won't be working). but how about a betta and some cories? (I love my cories!!!!) looking to get more when I get my big tank cycled

sorry, angels get too big for that tank :(

maybe some Dwarf Gourami?

Eleonora,

How about a small shoal of cardinal tetras. Or corys as big_fresh suggested. Or guppies (colourful and you could even breed them). As the tank is tall in relation to the width you will want to try and get a mix between top/middle/bottom dwellers. Corys will be mostly on the bottom, cardinals will be bottom/middle, guppies woudl be top/middle, etc. Have a look through some of the tanks in the Members Aquarium Pictures section and see if you see anything you like. Then you can have a look and see if thoise fish would suit a small tank.

I have two small tanks either side of my desk at work - one freshwater and one saltwater nano-reef. Some people in the office are fascinated, others are 'so what' and some don't even notice them (I even had to ask one guy not to lean on the over tank light fitting....).

Cheers, Eddie

You could keep small angelfish in that tank but angels grow fast so it would probably only be there for 6 months if you bought it very small.
