Are all mollies the same species?

Are all mollies the same species. Will they all school and breed together? Will different color mollies breed? Does it matter if one is sailfin and the other is lyre tail? Or is it better to buy all of the same kind?

Any kind of mollies will breed together.

My male dalmatian molly bred with my female balloon molly and they produced fry. Also, my male sailfin molly and male black mollies are constantly following my female marble mollies.

i do belive sailfins are different species than shortfin mollies. Female shortfins are usally more atractive to sailfin males and both kinds males enjoy the biggest females

Just for fun, do a search on FishBase for molly in the common name box.

The common molly and sail-fin molly are species I know are kept in the aquarium.

But what about broadspotted molly, shortfin molly, elegant molly, dwarf molly and another sailfin molly?

I'm not going to sort out which fish is which and how much of each is blended into the various tankbred varieties.
