I noticed on the Uk Aquarist forum that someone had used some compost meant for planting pond plants as a base layer.

Clearly this is MUCH cheaper than many commercial products...

and the tank in question eventually was the tank of the month.

Is this a good idea...?

Yes it works, but not as well as the ADA and Carib Sea products. I've used cactus compost in the past with good results. The cheaper options tend to not last very long until the nutrients are exhausted.

We use it in my daughter's planted 125 l. / 33 gal. with good results.

It's great value, but migration is an issue if you're re-scaping a lot.

Water column ferts should feed the plants if/when it's exhausted.

Thanks for the replies...

So mixing some compost with something like the ferka under-substrate powder would boost it's longevity and still work out cheaper than say, laterite
