Having been struggling for months to find a new tank for my betta, I may be getting him a white AquaStart 320 from PaH. It comes with an internal filter instead of the regular UGF (I think), and I intend to have some sand substrate on the bottom with a heavily planted area with silk plants and hopefully some bogwood with java fern on it at some point.

My question is if there is anything else that could go in there with my betta. I don't really have any idea as to how agressive he is, as he's always been kept completely by himself. I'm more than content with it just being him and a couple of shrimp in the new tank (if this is the tank I finally settle on), but I just wondered out of curiosity. I have seen people suggesting a couple of dwarf cories or some small tropicals (chilli rasbora, ember tetra, CPD etc), but I'm just not certain.

So, could anything else happily fit in there with the betta? Thanks :)

In theory some of the small trops you mention would go, but they do prefer being in shoals of at least 6, so you'd be quite overstocked. I'd stick with the betta and shrimps tbh.

I've checked up on some other forums, people seemed to think I'd get away with the betta and 5 pygmys in the 7 gallon, opinons?

UPDATE: After much discussion, I think I've decided against them. I want happy fish, because it is something I enjoy about fish keeping, so if I won't get happy fish by adding the cories, adding the cories I shan't do :)

Pygmy corys prefer to be in much larger groups than 5 anyway, at least 10.

Someone on one of the other forums pointed this out too, which was something I didn't realise. Maybe in the future...

Just noticed that Fluval now sell lids for the fluval chi, hmmm. While it's more expensive, the 19L version would be better weight-wise on my shelving unit, as tbh I'd be taking a bit of a risk with 28L. Think it'd be ok for him? I prefer the aquastart, but I don't want to risk it all collapsing if something else might work and I don't have anywhere else I could put the tank (otherwise I'd probably have gone bigger so I could have my cories ).

Just out of interest, what size tank would I be looking at for some cories with my betta?

I should think about 40 litres+ to have a nice group.

But you don't have room for the tank, remember ;)
