Hi all,

I just picked up a pair of Sailfin Mollies today at the LFS and had an interesting conversation regarding the use of aquarium salt. I was told that at a dosage of 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons (US) salt will not be harmful to my cories and my common pleco. I was also told that the mollies will be prone to fungus, ich and other ailments if they don't have salt. Hopefully all you knowledgeable people can answer the following questions and add additional information as well. Maybe we can get a real good thread about the use of aquarium salt going and the mods can pin it. Here's some questions for starters:

1. At a dosage of 1 tablespoon/5 US gallons, will aquarium salt be harmful to scaleless fish (eg cory cats and plecos)?

2. Is the dosage in question 1 a good general dosage for the common livebearers (mollies/platies,guppies)?

3. Supposedly this dosage is a therapeutic level only. Can this dosage be added at once (assuming proper dissolution in water prior to adding to tank)?

4. Can uniodized table salt be used instead of aquarium salt?

5. What would be the proper procedures to follow regarding the use of salt (eg adding salt, water changes, top-off due to evaporation)?

6. Is use of a hydrometer absolutely necessary if you only add salt to water added during water changes and not to top-off water (evaporation)?

7. What is the specific gravity for water with the above dosage?

I didn't see any articles regarding salt and livebearers. Thanks in advance for your help guys.

Ive heard that salt can really bother cory cats. I think plecos have scale but im not sure. when i had live beaers i would just poor random amounts out of the box into the tnak but never alot and mine did fine

it wont hurt the mollys(sailfins can become saltwater over time (read brackish forum))

theres a pinned topic in the catfish cradle about corys and slat, i think you should read it ;)
