I've heard some people add this to their fresh water tanks. I remember my parents did that when I was a kid, but couldn't actually tell me why, they used it just because the pet shop told them to. I don't trust the workers at our small pet store, they will do anything to sell a product. I have goldfish, minos and a black moore. I've heard salt can be used for sick fish, but I've seen people use it every water change. Do I need it?

Salt can be useful as a medicine, under certain circumstances. It can, for instance, reduce osmotic stress caused by poor water quality (which is why we used it in the 'old days'; because we didn't understand the chemistry going on in our tanks).

I'm afraid I have to tell you that your tank is massively overstocked and you will be running itnto problems very soon, if you aren't already.

Fancy goldfish, like moors, need 20 gallons minimum just for one; the normal long-bodied goldies don't belong in tanks at all; if you have those, you need to start asking round to find a pond they can go to.

In the meantime, 50% daily water changes and a read of the articles in our beginner's resource centre (link is in my sig) should keep your fish safe and healthy for the short term while you decide what to do.
