Hey all just wondering.... Is it possible to replace the fluorescent and incandescent light tubes fitted into an aquarium hood with different tubes? Incandescent seems to give of so much heat. I only want a low tech aquarium just wondering if you can replace the standard tubes with bettere ones? Or if so is led lighting a choice idn ???

If you can remove the existing lights without damaging the hood or compromising its strength then there's no reason not to. Lots of led lights are available as stand alone sealed units, so its simply a case of safely securing them into your existing hood.

But all light tubes come in different lengths so what if they aren't compatible with the hood? That's the problem

Well, measure the space you have in your hood and make sure you buy new ones that are the same size (if you're just replacing the tubes) or smaller, if you're buying a whole new system.

You can buy led lights - waterproof ones - in a long strip, on ebay.  I think this is what elmo666 was referring to.  Since it is a strip, doesn't matter the length.  There are certain places along the strip where you cut it; or just curve it and run a second line of lights.  The second line of lights is recommended; one line is not enough light for anything but special effect.
