I've just cracked the glass on yet another heater..... :X

Does anyone know if it's possible to get replacement glass tubes and replace broken ones?

You can get the glass bulbs, but unless its a really nice (i.e. expensive) heater I have found that it is cheaper to replace the whole thing. But that may be because I am from a small town and the LFS is the only game in town. I have broken many (my turtles like to bite them.. i think its the light inside) so I found a plastic cover for it. Haven't had a problem since. If your LFS doesnt sell them you could use a small diameter piece of PVC or some other aquarium/heat safe plastic. Just drill many holes into so that the water can flow by, maybe a little window for the light and you are good to go.

Good Luck!

Unfortunately, I have no one to blame for the breakage but myself.

I also have a heater with moisture inside, but no visible damage. Do you think that these heaters can be taken apart and resealed properly?

The thought of water and electricity scares me, but these heaters are pretty expensive items, especially the submersible ones.

Don't play with heaters, if you aren't sure what you are doing. You can get electric shock easily if water gets into that heater!

heaters are pretty expensive items

but they sure are more inexpensive than your life ;)

Im sure you can dry it out, and if the glass is not cracked I am sure they can be put back together as you can buy replacement bulbs for most heater types, as far as how you do that, I have no idea. (that was one long run-on sentence).

I have a water change tank that I fill with tap water and I have a heater and a pump in there so I can just pump water into my tanks when it has warmed up (oh, and i dechlorinate it too ;) ) but the other day, the seal decided to break on the heater and the whole tank then became live. . I then put my hand in to get the pump out for something and arhhhhhh :X . lucky nit wastn't to bad, not as bad as my electric cat actually. I don't think it is worth trying to repair them. I have now seen tese new ones just coming in to our shop. you can actually pick them up and hit them on a desk and they don't break so it may be worth while looking into something like that :)

That's what I need!!!!! Do you know the name of the brand, ste2k3? Are they submersible, hang on, or both? More expensive?

pmoyniha :)

Thanks for the info about there being replacement parts. Can I get them at a lfs (I've never seen them) or do I have to contact the maker?

My downfall seems to be when I try to do a fast water change without unplugging them. Don't you know that that's when the phone will ring or someone will knock on the door and when I get back to the tank.........you know the story!!!! :X

I also have a couple of submersibles that get moisture in them. I think I can seal them because the glass is intact but the water gets in through the plastic part at the top. (I've seen bubbles come up.) It doesn't get hot there. I'm inclined to paint it with nail polish, but I don't know if that would hurt the fish. Any ideas?

I don't know the name but i will find out tomorrow. they are completely submersable just like normal heaters. there is also a heater by the same company that goes in line with an external filter. i.e. they just have two hosetails that you push the flexy pipe over. :) . they retail for around £54 over here but i think that the shatter proof ones are a little cheaper. i think that £54 is a little expensive for a heater but it depends on how much you need it.

OMG ste2k3 that is REALLY EXPENSIVE!!!!

I just used a converter to check and if that is 54 GBP, it converts to $93 US.

I'm sure it's a good quality heater in addition to being so sturdy, but that's just a bit pricy for my budget.

Thanks, anyway. :D

Naw Im not too sure where to get them. My LFS used to stock them so I asked when i was in the other day, but he told me that the bulbs were mroe expensive to buy/sell then the actual heaters for MOST models so there was no point (financially at least). I think you would have to contcact the maker to get one near here, dont know about teh UK though. (I'm in Canada eh).

I have to agree, I bought a new heater the other day for £25

thought you may be in for a shock

they are expensive-well double what normall heaters cost but they are only really needed where it is not possable to have equipment in the tank.

I would say ebay, you can find tons at huge discounts. You could probably buy 2 for the price of a single one in a store. I would put it in pvc if you want to. Your fish should be fine even if it is shorting in the water as long as they don't touch ground. :)

the most i spend on a heater is £18:99 id never go over that now way!

just one question... is it true the bigger the tank the bigger the heater?

stummped dagnamit
