my whisper 3-40 gal power filter broke. so ive been lookin for other power filters for my 29 gallon cichlid tank and i found the aquaclear 50 it says its says it good for 20-50 gal so is that true or should i get bigger? Oh and is aquaclear a good brand?

Aquaclear is a great brand, but for cichlid tanks go at least one size bigger.

Thats not much, only 800lph, it also depends on how much media it holds. It would do for a standard community.
As Neontetra said it would be best to go a size up though. If you have a light stocking it would be fine though.

I used to run AC 50/200's on overstocked 29 gallon tanks, along with a sponge filter to increase bio filtration. They worked out well, I run them on a free standing tank outside the fishroom.

The next size up is an AC 70/300. That would really do some serious overfiltration on a 29, though the current may be an issue, depending on the fish.

I'm no expert, but running oversize filters seems to be working very good for me. I'm running the Aqua 30 on my 10g and the Aqua 50 on my 20g. Both have Aqua 20 sponges on the intakes with double sponges inside. Just cut a slit into the sponge longways and slip it over the intake. I never use the carbon.
