Hi,

I like the idea of adding a sump to my existing tank and saw this overflow system and wondered if they are any good?

I dont want to empty my current set up to drill it and thought this may be an alternative.

I would welcome any advice or alternative suggestions.

Thanks.

The only ones I would go for would be ones with an anti syphon on them - Tunze make a good one

I have the Tunze one on my Rena tank, it works reasonably well and provided you set it up right the anti-syphon seffieuk mentioned works. What you must not do is leave the silicone tubing open-ended and dangling down either the intake tube or hose to the sump...

BTW, if you do go for the Tunze one then I'd suggest adding an extra U-tube (the bit that goes over the tank wall and does the actual overflowing) to get more flow, unless you have a really low flow return pump. Another useful idea is not to have just a simple return straight back to the tank, as the odds of matching your return pump to your overflow are slim; if you put in a branch with a tap on it flowing back to the sump, you can effectively control your return flow rate far more easily than fiddling with the pump's adjuster (if it even has one). That said, the Tunze 1073 model pump I have is a very good match for the overflow rigged up as above, with the proviso that I have a further branch off the return line which feeds my phosphate and carbon cannisters (and UV lamp).
