As the title, got a new APS 1000+ been running for about a week along side the juwel internal which has been running for just over a year. (Not moved any mature media over yet as not had time but due a water change tomorrow so will then) but my main question is, i have some spare filter media as well as the current mature juwel media.

How much is safe to put in the lower tray and should i take the carbon and ceramic balls out the "netting" bags they are in or just leave them in the bags? Can i add another carbon and ceramic bag, and double up on the bio balls?

cheers :)

can someone move to tropical discussion please ;)

Leave the media in the bag, but there's no real point running carbon so you might as well not bother putting that in at all.

You can bascially fill the trays up with whatever you like/can fit in; as long as it's not so jammed in it slows down the flow of water through the filter, it's ok.

cool, as far as moving from a juwel box to the external, once i move the filter media over, would it hurt the heater to leave it in the juwel box for a while until i can remove the box? ie with no juwel filter running. Or am i best moving it out to get even temp around the water outlet?

trying to move from internal to external phased aproach rather than big bang all in one go....

I wouldn't leave the heater in the Juwel filter if it won't be running; take it out.

You will need to move the heater from the jewl box if you turn the filter off or you will get cold spots. You can run the filter with no media in the box will be fine. I 1 large sponge from my jewl cut it into 35mm cubes and put 3 cubes in each tray of my APS as all three trays have noodles/bio balls. I did remove the netting as you can fit more per tray without it

cheers. still got the juwel running with heater in. but minus 2 sponges. moved 2 into the external, bit of a squeeze but its in. so 50/50 split accross the 2 filters. Then on Sunday ill pluck up the courage to rip the juwel box out, move the heater and move last 2 sponges over :)
might even post some pics when i have removed the god awful black box!

I run both the internal and external the black box does not bother me 1 tiny bit, the amount of bacteria thats in the filter holds on the 350L is huge so ill keep mine :good:

my internals started looking scabby, like someone took a hammer to it from the inside..... plus the noise of it constantly droning does my box in! its a lido 120, the external is same noise level but i can hide it in the cupboard underneath and sound proof it ;) then there is the added benefit of externals as an added extra.
