I bought a pair of Nijsseni through mail order about 3 weeks ago - and two juveniles arrived and
quickly settled into the community tank.
The female, whi is slightly larger than the younger male, quickly took over a cave in the corner of the tank and generally chases anything that comes near it. She has been fairly aggressive towards the male who keeps well out of her way, and lives on the far side of the tank. In the last couple of days he has become noticably bigger, and will soon be considerably larger than the female.
This evening I noticed that she missed feeding, and has been contorting her body, lying on one side or the other and bending her tail, then disappearing into her cave for a few seconds before reemerging to start the contortions again. Between all this she was busy chasing everyone away from her patch as normal. At first I was worried that she was suffering from parasites, but had a look in the cave and can make out 5 to 6 red eggs on the roof fairly near the entrance. I think that there are most likely more being laid further back out of sight.
However she still will not let the male anywhere near her and chases him when she sees him on the far side of the tank - so I guess these eggs are n't going to get fertilised this time !
But its good to know that she is spawning, and perhaps when he matures abit then I'll get lucky ....
