Okay so I have an Aponogeton ulvaceus in my 75 Gallin Tank in sand substrate (Only half burried the bulb), The leaves start of a real nice bright green, but after a couple of weeks say when there around 20 cm, they go brown and start to worsen in condition from this point. Then new growth is bright green once again? Why can I not grow this plant with 20+ healthy leaves that I see in the LFS :(

Answers on a postcard please :)

From what I understand this plant requires a decent amount of flow and can suffer without it. If it's new it could just be adjusting to your water params. Though with that said can I'd like to ask for a pic of this plant. I think it's one of the most stunning species I've seen but online I've only come across ps touched pics. I'm planning to get this plant in the very near future because I had to remove my jungle vals which served as my background plant.

I have limited experience with this plant, which means that I put one in my tank just under a fortnight ago. It already had some 6" leaves that were a bit tatty so I removed and left a couple of smaller ones and 2 new shoots on it and now it has about 3 x 40cm leaves on it already and new shoots. This is with pressurized Co2 and EI fert dosing though. Are you dosing ferts/Co2? Might just be lacking something it needs.

believe it or not, this plant is also normally cultivated out of water, the old leaves will eventually die. Is this whats happening?

Yeah they die off but only 5 leaves grow at a time and doesnt last long :(

so is the brown, dead or dying or is it like diatom algae?

yes they should, have you got any pics??

I have grown these a couple of years back and they are good growers under any conditions. There are rumours that some need to be rested (taken out of the tank) for a couple of months a year. This is only true for a few species though.
