I have had some aponogeton bulbs growing for about two weeks now and two of them have sent up flower stalks. I have read that when they send up flowers, they leaves will die...It is a little odd since they are still sorta small and young, but have already had some flowers.

Should I cut off the stalk to allow the plant to live longer and would cutting it off help at all?

I heard that as well, so when my aponogeton blossomed, I thought it would go dormant, as I was away when the flower stalk rotted, but it didn't. There was a tiny die-off, but the plant bounced back bigger than ever. I think I have A. crispus, but it could very well be a hyrbrid. Some aponogetons can last multiple flowerings before they do actually go dormant. How many stalks were in each plant? Mine has one, which is typical of SE Asian species. The African species tend to have 2, while the Madagascar species may have more than 2. They also develop different habits if they are hybrids.

There was only one stalk on my plants. The box that the bulbs came in said taht they were aponogeton ulvaceous.
