hey i was thinking of possibly getting some apistos to add to my 40 us gallon tank that has at the moment,
2 kribs - pair
10 neons
2 bristlenoses
3 guppies
lots of plants, and rocks.
+ 2 cockatoo apistos?
thanks for any replies.

Cockatoo Dwarf cichlids are great community fish, although they do get a bit territorial when breeding. You should, however get a harem of at least 1 males and 2-3 females.

ok i don't know if a trio will fit, will that make me over stocked?
i was more concerned about the aggresion of the kribs doyou think a trio of cockatoo apistos could stand up to a pair of kribs, or would they be left alone?
The neons don't get picked on but they don't compete for territory so i'm confused and the cockatoos are 15 bucks each and i don't think they do returns if it dosen't work out.
Cheers.

I've kept both , not together , and don't think I would , not mated pairs anyway .

If you do it let us know how it goes .

I've never had kribs, so I couldn't tell you. Cockatoo are very peaceful (along cichlid terms), except when breeding, which won't happen often enough to keep them in good shape. They would hide as much as possible and you would never see them.

cheers for the replies looks like a big fat no on that one, i will probably move the kribs to a 20gal breeder and aim for some apistos in the near future.

Can you mix breeding apistos species?, like will they see other apistos as competition for mates or space, for example can you have say borelli's apistos (umbrella) and cacatoides( cockatoo/ spelt wrong), in a single tank or are they happier with other, not so cloesly related, species.
Also they won't hybridize if kept together will they?

My breeder had a harem of cacatuoides and a pair of borelli in a 75 gallon setup with no problems behavior-wise.
