Hi everyone,

Just a quick question about apistogramma temperaments. I have looked at these stunning fish but wonder if they will be aggressive towards my other fish? We had a male kribensis before who was very territorial and often nipped at other fish if they were anywhere near him. Are apistos similar in temperament as I have just managed to get rid of one bully and don't want another! :)

Thanks

Claire

What is the stocking in your tank, and what is the size?

For the most part, apistogramma are generally peaceful fish, and do great in community aquariums.

My pair of Apisto's are pretty peaceful towards their tank mates.
The Female occasionally lays eggs in her cave and guards the entrance, and the Male
will chase away anything that gets too near.
But he doesn't appear to nip fins or do any prolonged chasing, its more a question of just letting
everyone know that he's boss.
On my experience I would recommend these apisto's with a community tank - the others certainly are not stressed
out having them around.
Really fun fish to own, lovely markings and real characters. :good:

It's a 100L hexagonal tank which means that there isn't a lot of floor space. It has 2 columbian tetras, 4 red-eye tetras, 10 guppys (don't ask lol) a young angelfish, 2 corys, a baby plec and an otto.

If I was getting one, I would just get a male so that there wouldn't be any territorial breeding behaviour, and then maybe in the future if I fancied breeding them then I could move him to my other tank and get a female so they were away from the others.
