I got my first pair of aggies around a month ago.
I'm a little unsure if I have a male/female pair.
My question is is it possible for a sleeper male to take on female spawning colours?
At times they are exactly the same bright yellow colour with the black dot and black line on fins
Thanks in advance
Alison

Hi Alison sounds to me like you have got two females there,Ive got two females with one male, they vary their colours from a dull brown to a bright yellow as you describe, but the male is three times the size ,without pics I would guess that your two are both young ladies

You should be able to tell the difference fairly easily. The male has a distinctive lyretail and a much more prominent definition on the dorsal. Colour will depend somewhat on whether you have a "plain" agassizi, or one of the colour variants such as the flame/double red.

One catch out can be a submissive male that looks less coloured.

Yeah thats why i was unsure I thought I possibly had a sleeper male, the fish had a slightly pointed tailfin but not distinct lyre tail it was also a lot bulkier than the one I know is female for sure.
Another thing that confused me is it was trying to lure the female into the coconut cave!
I've returned it to the lfs and it is female they are going to exchange for a definite male when new stock arrives next week.
Thanks for the replies much appreciated
Alison
