Hi guys,

I recently got a pair of apistogramma agassizii, they are beautiful. I got one male and one female who is much smaller than the male and yellower but they're both quite small.

My other stocking is:

2 dwarf gourami
5 sterbai corys
5 neon tetra
4 pitbull plec
1 l288 plec

Tank size 125ltr

After looking up dwarf cichlids as showpiece fish for my aquarium and reading up, it seems these are a reasonably 'peaceful' cichlid as far as they go, and usually are fine in communities as long as there aren't any other males of their type.

I don't know whether this is normal or not (still learning a lot about fishkeeping) but the male seems to dislike the gouramis but doesn't bother with anything else. But tonight the female is also being a little snappy with most things in the tank really. She's found herself a home inside one of my ornaments... There is plenty of cover and a cave but her spot is over right on the left side of the tank. It doesn't look like she's defending any specific 'territory', neither the male... They're just swimming around and occasionally having a pop at the other fish.

Now I don't know whether this is innocent or what? None of the fish (touch wood) seem stressed or bothered actually, they just swim off and get on with it... But could this be the start of a problem? The dwarf gouramis occasionally chase each other but it never gets to the point of actually harming each other and up to now it seems the same with the apisto's...

As it happens I'm in the very process of preparing to get a larger tank,.. It's between the Fluval Roma 240 or the Profile 1000, just deciding which is best. So an upgrade is imminent, but maybe not for a few weeks.

What are your thoughts?

Apistos are very peaceful for cichlids, that being said, they are cichlids. Most likely they are just trying to carve out their territory, since they are new. Not unusual for them to act out when new, then become model citizens... Until they spawn.
