I just received my API master test kit through the post and wanted to try it out so I tested the tap water (straight from mains supply)

These are the results I got:

pH = 7.0
Ammonia = 0 ppm
Nitrite = 0 ppm
Nitrate = 20 ppm

Is that all OK? Anything to worry about? Does it restrict the fish I can keep?

pH 7.0 is neutral and the nitrates sound normal for tap water... i believe many things can alter the ph substrate wood ect so it depends on your tank results really but on the upside your drinking water is A ok :good: lol

Great stuff,

I do have some mopani (I think) wood - two peices about a foot long each - which I've heard can lower the pH. Not sure if that's good or not?

Other than that I have some gravel, some fake plants and a couple of them statue type things that came with the setup!

Are you cycling a tank?

If so I'd recommend leaving the mopani wood out until the tank has cycled because if it lowers the PH down to around 6 then the cycle may stall

Andy

there are alot of hardy fish out there that can live happily in a big pH range so i wouldnt worry about it unless you get a fish that needs the water pH that is in a certain range i guess best thing to do would just buy fish that you know can live in your tanks water conditions easiest way to find out this ive found is on the net or ask in here and someone will have the answer for sure, If you already have fish and they seem content then still i wouldnt worry if they are happy enough :)

ah thats good andy is here he has helped me alot in the past he will sort you out mate :good:

Thanks Andy - I'm hopefully starting a fishless-cycle at the weekend if all goes well. I will leave the wood out until the cycle is complete.

That actually answered one of my future questions - so thanks for that!

Yeah they are isabel and hannibal (named him after i saw what i thought was him attacking isabel but after i read on here i realised it was just affection lol) they are beautiful and growing so fast had them a month and theyve grown by 2" lol :)

Yes, they are surely stunning.

When I next need to restock my tank I think I'm going to go for a more minimalist look with angels as a centrepiece with some nice shoaling fish and cories. I have community tank at moment and its nice but I think tanks dedicated to a few species look better than 10 different species in the same tank

Andy

Ps - what species of angel fish are they?

Thanks for the compliments :D i fell inlove with these fish the moment i saw them and im doing the same with my new tank when i get it i will have isabel and hannibal as the center piece, my 2 sordtails for colour, 5+ julli corys, 9 black neon tetras and im thinking about getting some flying foxes to eat the algea off my plants so hopefully it will be a nice little setup when it's done

Tw3lv3.

and im not sure what spieces they are they were just labelled "angelfish" at my LFS sorry mate
