Converting my 20g into a saltwater FOWLR tank this week. I'm going to be buying..

x20lb of Live Fiji Rock
Protein skimmer for a 50 gallon tank
30 gallon Marineland BioWheel filter
30 gallon power
30 gallon power sweep powerhead
Salt mix that treats 150 gallons
Hydrometer

I just plan on removing all the water in the tank, replacing the substrate, adding the rock, filling it up with water, mixing in the salt, and hooking everything up. Can I use the filter media that's already in my tropical setup? But anyway,

My current setup is already cycled and what not, so I think I'll let everything stabilize for a week or two, MAYBE add a damsel or something after that. As far as stocking, what can I go with? I'm kind of iffy on one medium/big show fish, I'd love a community setup of crabs, snails, shrimp, and small fish.

x20lb of Live Fiji Rock for my 125l been told i only need 15kg, so you probally could get away with less.

Hydrometer i would get a refractometer as it is more reliable.

But anyway, add water and mix salt, wait 24 hours, test sg if it is the right sg add you rock. from what i understand i dont think media from tropical filter should be used. but im not using a filter to i cannot be 100%

Like fishy55599 said, don't add any live rock until the salt
Water is At correct sg (1.025) and temp (25 c) other wise you will get die off.

Tropical filter media in a marine tank is a no, no I'm afraid.

If you get cured LR and it's transported in water you might not get any die off which would result in a mini cycle or maybe not even a cycle.

You could do with ditching a hydrometer as they're inaccurate and get a refractometer.

You need powerheads that will achieve 20 x turnover per hour ie on a 20g you would need 400gph powerhead.

Best to mix salt water in the tank first up to temp and sg and then add your live rock and then your substrate. Once rock is in you need to test daily for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph.
If after 2-3 days your ammonia and nitrite are still zero and your ph is somewhere in between 8.0-8.3 then your ready to add CUC and livestock. But not all at once tho.
