heya I'm looking at buying a surface skimmer for my tank as I get a great reduction in lights due to scum :(

Link to Skimmer

from looking at it I gather it will suck the surface and still suck dirt from the tank!!! I.e from the lower section...

do you think it will connect to my ex1200 (16mm I think)

The scum is easily prevented by increasing surface agitation, dont waste your money on a skimmer, it is quite usually found in new set ups aswell.

i use one and id always recommend it, increasing surface agitation makes you use extra co2 which when on a budget isnt ideal, also when i tried it it only seemed to make a big hole in it, as soon as i stopped it it forms back into a full surface scum, i find my skimmer does a great job of sucking in surface and underwater waste, it also collects dead leaves at the top of the skimmer which are then easier to hoik out, its only a fiver so not much wastage, it works on my cristal profi 500 which is rated at 1200lph dunno what the tubing diameter is, surface scum can also result from insufficient co2 or too many nutrients, it also seems to gather more when there are plants touching the surface.

If you had posted this anywhere else I would have told you it was a waste of money. But since this is the planted tank forum I agree with Fozzie that its a good way to keep the surface looking great without messing up your CO2 consumption. Even if you aren't adding CO2 directly, you wouldn't want to agitate the surface IMHO

so are we in an agreement that this specific one is good?
I'm just concerned if it will connect to my 16mm pipes...
I don't have severe scum but I do have crud floating on the surface.. and the water can never be to clean :)
