I'm setting up a new tank, just a little one, because I got a new flat and I don't have much space. The tank doesn't have light fittings built into the hood and I don't have time to build my own so I got a self-contained light unit made by Clear-Seal that supposedly just sticks on under the hood with a sticky fixer type thing.

The pet shop employee assured me it was safe for use in aquariums but it doesnt look it to me. It seems that it would be easy for water to get in. It has no instructions with it at all. Any thoughts? I've got a pic of it in case that's any use:

Does it not have a clear plastic cover to cover the bulb ??

If your hood is high enough off the water you may be ok, small tanks don't usually house splashing fish...the only thing you have to worry about is getting water in it when doing a water change...etc

It's designed for aquaria, and made by a reputable manufacturer, so I can't see and problems in using it.

I had something similar in a frog viv years ago and never had any problem with it.

No cover....just the bulb, exposed to the water. alarming!

regardless of whether the fish splash there'll inevitbaly be some condensation which is why im worried. I guess as long as i dont stick my fingers in it it'll all be good ;)

I have the same light in one of my tanks, just put a condensation tray over the tank under the light and it won't get splashed

You should be able to get hold of one at your lfs, they only cost about £2 depending on how big your tank is and just look like a plastic corregated sheet :)
