Has anyone here used this product? I was thinking of getting it for my tank, since its cloudy. Here's the product info at BigAls.com:

Purigen is a premium synthetic adsorbent that is unlike any other filtration product. It is not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity that exceeds all others, even hypersorb , by over 500%. Purigen removes proteins, nitrites and nitrates, ammonia, and a broad spectrum of organics, yet its impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity. Like Hypersorb , Purigen darkens progressively as it exhausts, and is easily renewed by treating with household bleach. A 100 ml bag of Purigen purifies and polishes up to 100 gallons of water for up to six months. Purigen is designed for both marine and freshwater use. Not to be used with any products with slime coat in them as this can cause the product to become toxic
What does that mean?? I cant use it with AquaSafe or other conditioner?

I use it in my 20 gallon

the water is very very clear
i wouldn't do without anymore :)

I use it with hagen aquaplus and big al's multi-purpose conditonner and haven't had a single problem so far. It's been in my tank for 4 months

products with "slime coats" are like Stress Coat and other products that replenish a fishes slime coating. A great dechlorinator that doesnt use this is Amquel.

I usually use Aquasafe byt Tetra...I dont want anything to happen to the fish...

Ravekiss,
Go to Seachem and they have info on puragen and faq'a also on the product. I am thinking of making the switch myself to reduce the amount of activated charcoal I use as it can deplete the dissolved O2 if overused. Puragen is safe with other seachem products such as prime, stressguard, etc. It's all on their website. Good Luck!!! :shifty:

Hi...but...I have NEVER heard of activated carbon depleting the amount of oxygen in a tank. Oxygen is two molecules of oxygen with a double bond between it. As such, it doesn't bind to activated carbon ©. The amount of oxygen in a tank is predominantly dependent on the surface area of the tank, the depth, circulation of water to increase contact of bottom water with the surface and whether or not regular tank maintenance is done (rotting food at the bottom of a tank can deplete oxygen and produce hydrogen sulfide). Sorry..but..just wanted to get the facts straight on one of the replies. SH

Here is a quote from an article I read regarding the removal of dissolved oxygen by activated carbon.

It appears obvious from this that carbon removes beneficial and unwanted elements. The needed elements that are being removed can, of course, be replaced. The potentially dangerous one that is removed (lowered is a better description) is oxygen. Using fresh carbon will immediately lower the DO content of the water and will also remove yellowing matter (Gilvin, albumin and so on) which, as Luis Mercado pointed out, lets more light through. This can result in a sudden increase in photosynthesis which may result in excessive amounts of oxygen being produced by corals and can lead to so-called oxygen poisonning and the release of symbiotic algae (bleaching).

The link for the article is http://www.athiel.com/lib/txtfiles/carbon.html.

I am by no means an expert but this is the information I came across. Have a look at it and let me know what you think. I am concerned about it beacause I have a planted aquarium and was worried I might be running myself into trouble using two carbon inserts in my filters as opposed to one.

I do it was recommended by yvez, and I gave it a go. Its a very good product and plus you can reuse them.

I think I'll give it a try..but I'll watch it carefully for any bad signs. Thanks guys!

Glad I could help Frank :D

it sure is worth a try. I don't regret using it at all! I'm almost due for a bleach treatment now though, the bag is pretty dark brown...
