Hello,

Bought Black Calvus on Monday, hes not very social , in fact i have seen his nose poke out of his chosen hiding place about 5 times. Will I get to see him, or is that it.

Has anyone kept these cool little guys before, if so is this normal. What are their habits ?

Many thanks

Leon

Just let it settle down first and it won't be shy in a couple of days....very nice fish.....it's normal for them to do that, when I first bought mine it was on the back of my rocks most of the time and It took about a day for him to notice everybody's feeding habits and as soon as all the fish go to the surface to feed he'd follow...don't worry about it.....

Calvus are always cautious, as a species they are evolved to lay in wait, as ambush predators they will always do this. They will however start to settle and realise that the food source for the tank is the surface and as with most africans they will become far more confident. What size is he and do you have any other calvus or compresiceps in the same tank.
