i have just heard on the news that mollies are meant to have survived for 70000 years without any males and when they reproduce they only reproduce females. well iv male mollies and iv at least one male fry. so does anyone know anything about this

yeah there's a couple of links under the tropical chat area. :)

Parthenogenesis. They aren't the only vertebrate that does it, so does this particular species of gecko. Some mammals are also capable of it. Basically it's when the female produces an ovum with the diploid number of chromosomes and it then thinks it's fertilised and starts developing. (Normally both sperm and ovum have the haploid number of chromosomes and form a zygote with the diploid number when they fuse.) There have been recorded cases of human parthenotes but none of them have survived until birth 0- something seems to cause them to abort in the second trimester.

The Amazon molly dose produce odd males once in a blue moon but these are not viable to breed with as their triploid.

However their an amazing little fish.

I hear that one type of molly actually interrupts other mollies ahem um "doing the nasty" and that is how they fertilize their own eggs. This is because the males are infertile. It's in my fish encyclopedia. Pretty cool and smart :good:

There are many different, special adaptations that livebearing fish have developed in order to 'deal' with their ecological challenges. It is a very interesting subject.
