I was just wondering if anyone had used   Easy-Life ProFito and Easycarbo, they seem a cheaper alternative to Flourish and if so are they any good

They are very good :) I've used them myself on my old 3ft Planted tank. They work well.

I've just started to use API's CO2 booster... First dose was today, so I can't exactly tell you how well it works.  Ironically, my local Petsmart has all the Seachem products, but not Excel.  :dunno:

Great, thanks for that, I'll get some on order if I really need them,
This planted tank stuff is all quite new to me, been reading loads but still not sure if I need the carbon, the plants have been in for about six months, the java fern has doubled in size in that time, the anubia I have recently pruned this by half to give some to a friend but I suppose that had doubled in size also, the grasses at the front don't seem to grow at all, but then they haven't died either and the java moss that I was told would be rampant is a lot slower growing than that, that's been in about three months and is probably half a big again as when I got it, lighting is at 1wpg so I assume this is rated as a  low light tank, I have used plantamin in the past but nothing seemed to change so stopped using it after I finished the first bottle, so where do I go from here carbon or no

They are excellent products but If your going to use Easycarbo you will need to dose KP&N as well as the profito or you will have problems very quickly

I literally only dosed EasyCarbo and Profito and never had any problems with a 2x T8 Unit across the top... A 4ft Juwel unit.

You had no algae and no plant deficiencies dosing just trace and carbon? I find that a little hard to believe as KPN must always be dosed when co2 or liquid carbons are introduced. Simply because plants will absorb KPN alot faster when being dosed co2 or a carbon suppliment. This is why we have EI and ferts such as Neutro+. This is also why Easylife also make Nitro, Phosfo and K. If KPN isnt replenished with the ferts and are allowed to become exhausted, this is when we get algae break outs such as GSA GDA GBA. Also obviously our plants wont grow as well because the key nutrients are not there not to mention covered in algae.

Edit: Easylife fosfo & nitro - spelt in wrong. Just in case you wished to search for it:)

You're old lighting helped you get away with it. The plants will have been growing slowly enough to scavange any available Nitrate and phosphate out of the water.
Libeig's law would show that your trace and carbon where above the threshold determined by the light and at the same time this bar was low enough to allow ambient Macro's to support growth (or at least slow death - algae on anubius edges etc).

Chances are in a modern T5 situation you wouldn't fair as well.

Thanks for the replies and comments, I think I was looking at these products as a quick and easy way of improving plant growth, but having read SLIM's guide to pressurized co2 ( which I found to be the best guide on the subject I have read, easy to understand and explained in laymen's terms, Thanks SLIM) this is the way I am going to go in the new tank, I will be purchasing items over the next few weeks to spread costs a little, don't think I will be adding it to the 80L as not sure if I will be keeping it when new tank is up and running,

Glad it helped and good luck with your new pressurized venture:)

It was simple, I always use tap water with no dechlorinator... That and no I had no algae and my plants grew very quick... I was trimming the Stargrass back at east once-twice a week and the Indian Fern.... Don't get me started.
